The article covers experience in developing and implementing national programs for construction of motorways in various countries and provides an assessment of their impact on the economy, the social sphere as well as on employment and transport costs. The conclusion is that motorway construction which had a significant impact on accessibility of various areas and reduced travel and delivery times and transport costs, lead to increased competitiveness of the economy in countries that implemented large-scale road network development programs.
